I work in a series format, as preliminary ideas are initially explored in drawings. Often I draw from live models and photographic references when developing a theme, the drawing cycle advances and surreal concepts are introduced. I experiment with the Bargue, Flemish and Venetian techniques of figurative painting/drawing, including grisaille, glazing, scumbling, sight size and turning form. Photo references and drawing studies are discarded as the painting cycle begins. Source material may include fashion editorials, vintage eroticism, academic drawings, pantone color wheels, coloring/comic books, vintage pornography, and 19th century portraiture, among others. Subject matter is varied, but in nearly every series, the subject is under some sort of stress, recognition, or surveillance, and the viewer is cast as juror, witness or spy.
