Sheila Ross, Canadian born and raised, is married to a Turk and recently naturalized as a dual Canadian American citizen. In spite of strong ties to these nations, she has been firmly rooted in New York since 1995. She has BFA and MFA degrees from University of Western Ontario and New York University respectively. Ross has exhibited in Canada and the US at Dam Stulhtrager gallery, Socrates Sculpture Park, Islip Art Museum, Workspace and Aljira. Since 2006, Ross has been collaborating with another Canadian artist on Yurt City, an ongoing installation project, which has been installed in more than 10 venues all over New York state and the world, including Rotterdam and Memphis. Initially trained as a painter, Ross has also been engaged in making sculpture for more than two decades. She began seriously working in clay about four years ago, shortly after returning to making paintings. Often similar and unifying iconography and motifs appear in all the forms in which Ross works.
