Art is a reflection of culture and its ideologies. My current work of paper constructions use annual commodities prices as an entry point into object making. Cutting out the shape of year over year commodities trading price graphs, I take the material scraps left over and transform them into objects of representation. Appropriating fiscal data, these financial landscapes attempt to assign consciousness and meaning behind the value proposition for goods and services.
As more of these financial landscapes are made, the works themselves become commoditized, creating a self-reflection of art world speculation. A landscape no longer depicts the physical environment we occupy, but rather the national unconsciousness of ubiquitous economic conditions.
