Chie Shimizu was born in Hamamatsu 1971, grew up in Yokohama, Japan. Shimizu works predominantly in the medium of sculpture with Japanese painting and metal leaf finish. She states, “My work is about the question that arises through ones life, what is the significance of human existence.” Shimizu studied crafts at Tokyo University of Arts and completed BFA in 1993. She moved to New York in 1996 and earned MFA major in sculpture at New York Academy of Art in 2001. Her works has been exhibited in Tokyo, Japan and New York, the United States. She lives and works in Queens, New York.
