From the threshold between participation and observation, I break with day to day experience. In an effort to overcome a basic human contradiction, to think and to engage at once, we are seduced by the easy interpretation of our predicament. Us versus them. Like versus dislike. Duality insidiously takes advantage of a desire for simplicity and so pollutes our mechanism of perception. However, once we consider these binaries as pairs of conflations—nature and culture, “self and other”, present and absent, “is and is not”, the crutch on which we lean in order to define the world collapses to reveal the simplest truth of all—not only that are we the source of what we perceive, but also that we are one in the same as the things we see. My photography and video work explores a range of subjects in an embrace of liminality. An effort to transform the subject/object relationship from real to metaphor liberates a state of being—one.
